"Sent to hospital not easily accessed by public transport"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Respiratory Medicine (Ward 7) Victoria Hospital / Respiratory Medicine

(as the patient),

I was referred by a Wishaw hospital respiratory consultant to get a mouth guard to pull my bottom jaw forward.  This is to try and help my sleep apnoea by opening up my airway.

My appointment came through to get a mould made of my mouth. It was for the Victoria hospital, Kirkcaldy.  I phoned to see why it was so far from home.  To get there I needed to get 2 trains and bus, involving a total journey of 2 hours 30 minutes each way.  I then had to return to get fitted with a gum shield - another 5 hours of travel.   There was no help with getting there.

It was very stressful and costly.

Dear Scifi,

Thank you for sharing your recent experience in getting a mouth guard fitted following a referral from respiratory medicine at University Hospital Wishaw.

I am so sorry to hear of the traveling involved to get measured for the gum shield and also the return visit to have it fitted.

It would be helpful if you could contact Patient Affairs at University Hospital Wishaw, so that they can understand the issues in more detail, and provide a personal response.

Dear Scifi

My name is Siobhan McIlroy and I am the Head of Patient Experience. NHS Fife welcomes all feedback, so thank you for taking the time to post on Care Opinion. I am sorry for the delay in you receiving a response.

Your trip from Wishaw to Kirkcaldy has been some trek and I can appreciate this would have been stressful. I see Jenni from NHS Lanarkshire has reached out to you to contact her so that she can discuss this further with you. Hopefully she will be able to answer your questions.

I hope the mouth guard helps with your sleep apnoea.

Thank you again for sharing your story, best wishes and take care, Siobhan
