"Mentalization Based Treatment - introduction group"

About: Community Forensic Services / Nottinghamshire MBT Service

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

The MBTi group has helped me not hold things in, to talk and bring up issues I’ve had with people, talking them through instead of holding them in. It was hard talking about painful issues, which left me feeling a bit down and depressed when leaving the group. I also would’ve liked to have been with the same people in the next group.

I do think same sex groups would make sense and be easier to open up and feel comfortable. The group facilitators were very good listeners, friendly, polite, and non-judgemental. Overall, the MBT service has been brilliant.

Thank you so much for your feedback which we really appreciate you taking the time to do. It sounds like despite the group being hard at times, it has been helpful to have a space to open up and discuss relational issues. This can often be a challenge when engaging in therapy so I am pleased to hear you felt listened to and not judged. I hope that by continuing to work in a therapy group, it becomes somewhat easier to sit with and discuss your emotions.

We also take on board your thoughts around being in the same therapy group as the people in MBTi and same sex groups. The nature of our therapy groups are rolling to allow peer support from more experienced members, hence MBTi group members are separated into current groups for this to happen. We do make every effort to consider which therapy groups people go into and with who, we have also seen the benefit of mixed groups to offer different perspectives and have an opportunity to practice mentalizing with people of all ages/genders.

I will gladly pass on your positive feedback to the group facilitators and want to wish you all the very best for the next step in your MBT journey.

Best wishes, Amy

Thank you for this feedback, It's great to hear that you had a positive experience of the facilitators and the group. It seems you were able to bring events and issues to the group so you weren't left holding onto things which sounds like a positive change for you.

As Amy has said, therapy can be a challenge at times but my understanding is that this becomes easier with time and with good use of the therapy space in bringing in 'here and now' events and making use of the support through the 1:1 sessions too.

I appreciate what you're saying about moving into therapy with people that you know and have developed a bond with and this is considered wherever possible when therapists plan group allocation. As the groups are generally rolling we usually only have a small number of places become available at any one time so it's impossible to have all group members move into the same therapy group together. It's also really helpful for the group process to be in a group with others who are at different stages of therapy, people who have been where you are, who have had to build new relationships in the group, as you have been able to do in MBTi.

With very best wishes for your next step, Louisa (Service Manager)
