"Two unempathetic doctors ruined my whole experience"

About: Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - Queen's Medical Centre Campus / Accident and emergency Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - Queen's Medical Centre Campus / Gynaecology

(as a service user),

I was admitted to the Gynae ward with severe excruciating right side abdominal pain after finding out through 3 scans, 2 trans vaginally and 1 abdominal scan, in Gyne Triage, that I had a cyst on my right ovary.

I had been in A&E from very early morning for over 12 hours, but they treated me well in A&E, no complaints, not even about the long hours wait for all blood , ECG tests etc. Once admitted in Gynaecology Ward again the staff and nurses tried their best to make me as comfortable as possible and treat me in a person centred way, not just number 4 on a bed.

However the two Doctor's I was sadly to end my stay there ruined my whole experience in the ward. They had zero empathy, zero compassion and were lacking in any kind of human emotion. I was left feeling sad, upset, vulnerable in extreme pain and clueless at what they were trying to say, next steps e.g. their communication level was pathetic and the porters, CT scan team and nurses apologised to me on their behalf.

I had to speak my truth and told them what I felt and how these two individuals had turned the good experience into an awful one, I do not want to return to see these emotionless doctors

The other Doctors I had seen in the week stay I had, had been excellent. They listened attentively, understood my history of ovarian cancer and being fast tracked into having key hole surgery in 2017 in London. They felt my concern and tried to do everything to make me pain free while trying to find a solution and cause for my pain. They gave me correct pain management and I was comfortable, whilst we waited for results of MRI Scan, was it a re-occurrence of Ovarian Cancer or something else? It was very, very upsetting and sad for me, that on the day I needed the most support from empathetic Doctors I received the opposite.

The MRI Scan and CT scan came back with same result, nothing other than the cyst on my ovary. These two unempathetic doctors even suggested it could be my kidney or kidney stones even after explaining in detail my history of Ovarian Cancer and Emergency Op to remove all dangerous cancerous or benign things from my tummy.

I told one of he doctors as I left the ward with my belongings and husband that they had no empathy, they were cold as ice. I feel they were emotionally repressed, overworked and they had probably been over exposed over the years to patients in pain and had lost all compassion.

I feel these two doctors should not be treating vulnerable and in serious pain patients until and unless they are retrained and have had counselling as they were totally useless to me. Both doctors (I don't know their full names) but I will be making an official complaint about these two people who ruined my end at the lovely Gynae in patient ward.

I will find the solution to my pain and I'm 95% sure it's the ovarian cyst. Just like last time. I am left now with no option but to go see my lovely GP tell her what happened, do an official complaint and get healthy again via correct diagnosis and treatment and pain management.

These two insensitive individuals, saw me cry like a baby in pain yet did nothing to treat my pain in a professional adequate systematic way, unlike the other excellent doctors in the previous days. I stayed from Tuesday to Monday, I walked out myself this afternoon after speaking and telling my truth. Most patients in my ward and nurses had become my friends and knew my story. They were happy I spoke my truth and left saying I must complain even one of the nurses said this to me!

Dear patient,

Thank you so much for providing feedback on your stay in our hospitals all feedback is essential in making sure that we get our services right for each patient and look at ways in which we can improve. Please be assured your comments will be shared with the Matron and service managers now.

I was pleased to hear that overall your experience of the gynae department was a good one and that whilst there you were supported by the teams looking after you, however if you would like further support on how to complain about the doctors who were less supportive I would urge you to contact our PALS department at PALS@nuh.nhs.uk as they will guide you through the process.

May we take this opportunity to wish you a speedy recovery and we look forward to hearing from you soon.

Kind regards, Kelly Morley – Patient experience and engagement officer.
