"Blue lighting in Health Centre toilet"

About: General practices in Lanarkshire

(as a carer),

This is a minor issue in the otherwise excellent Lanark Health centre, but between appointments (for someone else) on Tuesday, I pushed into the ladies loo and was basically blinded for 20 minutes afterwards.

The centre has installed some type of UV lighting to discourage drug abuse, and it may even be safe if it is left on. But I walked into a dark toilet, flicked the light switch, and this grotesque lighting flashed a few times then came on. And, of course, I automatically looked into it in surprise. It was like a Dr Who set, and I did not linger; but back outside I had the imprint of that ghastly flashing on my retina.

It was like being blinded by a laser pen. I was seeing fluorescent bars and stars across my vision for a good 20 minutes, and I was still unsettled when I left an hour later. I would have been unable to drive in that initial 20 minutes.

I am a carer in my sixties, and no snowflake, but that was shocking. I understand the centre has problems with drug users, but there must be better ways of dealing with that than hurting random OAPs.

If the lighting has to stay, there should be a warning on the door; and it should be left on, so no-one is walking into darkness then hit by UV flashes. It really is brutal.

Dear JeanieDeans,

Thank you for taking the time to feedback on your recent visit to Lanark Health Centre.

I am so pleased that generally speaking you find the health centre to be excellent with only one problem - the blue lighting. I am so sorry to hear that this light effects your vision very badly when you need to turn it on and has a lasting effect on you. We want to do our best for all our patients.

GP’s are independent contractors and are responsible for investigating and responding to any concerns a person may have about the service; they are not registered to respond directly to feedback through Care Opinion. Can I please invite you to contact the Practice Manager if you would like a direct response about the service or you can also contact Primary Care Patient Affairs, I have included their contact details.

Kind Regards,

Jenni

Update posted by JeanieDeans (a carer)

Lanark Health Centre is not a GP practice. It is a clinic offering a wide range of services to patients from a wide area; and it is clearly branded NHS Lanarkshire.

Dear JeanieDeans,

I am sorry for any confusion caused by my response. For the purposes of Care Opinion, Lanark Health Centre is classed under GP practices although I am aware that it offers a wide range of services within it. Unfortunately the health centre are not set up for responding on Care Opinion therefore I had asked that you speak to the primary care patient affairs team or practice manager.

I hope that this helps to clarify, and again I am sorry about the problematic lighting within the toilets.

Kind Regards,

Jenni
