"PPV corrective surgery of my 4 yr old son"

About: Musgrove Park Hospital / Accident and emergency Paediatrics / Oak Ward

(as a parent/guardian),

My son had a patent processus vaginalis which was diagnosed in October 2023.

We were waiting for corrective, elective surgery and monitoring the hernia it caused in the meantime.

In April we had to take him to A and E as the hernia would not reduce, which can be serious.

It reduced on our 50 minute journey to Musgrove, but the doctor still wanted to check him over so we returned the morning after. This became our initial consultation with the surgeon.

A POAC nurse gave me a pre-operative form to fill in and we were informed we would be called/sent a letter with a date for surgery within the month.

A few days later the operation was booked for that Friday.

The service and care were exceptional, professional and caring.

The timing was prompt and the information given to my son was age appropriate and calmly delivered.

I had questions for the anaesthetist (a part of the procedure that worried me the most), which were answered clearly and kindly. I felt prepared and supported throughout the experience, something that we, as a family, had never experienced before.

My son was calm but a bit quiet. He did not experience any fear or panic to my knowledge, just a normal level of nervous apprehension.

This was due to the excellent service and efficiency of the team at Musgrove.

Dear Horologiumqd46

What fantastic feedback!

Thank you so much for giving your time in sharing your experience about your son’s stay with us.

I am delighted you experienced such excellent service and supportive care from all of the specialty teams and individuals whom were involved in your son’s care. Our staff members within the Children’s unit, cross-specialty teams and departments work so diligently together to ensure care is as optimal and as co-ordinated as it can possibly be. I appreciate it makes such a difference during the stressful and worrisome times when your child needs hospital care and especially so when events and care needs become escalated requiring timely treatment. I do hope your son is now fully recovered or well on the way to a full recovery after his surgery.

I am also pleased you received all the information you needed and it was clearly communicated to you and given at an age appropriate level for your son. We understand communication is such an important aspect of care for patients and their families and I am glad you received this consistently well- including pre-admission and during your stay with us.

I have passed on your wonderful feedback to the surgical and anaesthetic departmental Leads. They will kindly share your feedback with their respective colleagues whom looked after your son. I have also shared your feedback with the staff members who looked after your son on Oak Ward and the whole of the Children’s unit. Everyone will be extremely happy to hear about your feedback and will be hugely grateful of your kind comments.

Many thanks again.

Dr Holly
