"Communication needs to be a lot better"

About: Royal Hospital for Children (Glasgow) / Cardiology (heart problems) Ward 1E

(as a parent/guardian),

First of all, the staff on 1e are amazing and I cannot fault 99.99% of them, absolute angels. The ward was spotless too. Great facilities.

However communication needs to be a lot better for the following reasons:

We were called to come in to be checked we stayed several days and got a feeding tube. The nurse who spoke to us started admittance paperwork before the Dr had read the notes.

We moved rooms and were missed off Drs rounds.

We were told by a member of facilities team You’s are going, before a nurse etc told us we were going home (as they needed to clean the room).

Registrar came in and said someone would call us the next day regards surgery, this did not happen.

Daughter was discussed at consultants meeting around 4 weeks ago, she is on the urgent list but still no date for surgery. I have other children I need to make arrangements for. How urgent is urgent list?

Dear Lynsey86,

I am sorry to hear your daughter was admitted to Ward 1E at the Royal Hospital for Children and is awaiting surgery. I am the Lead Nurse for the ward.

It is our normal process to undertake the admission paperwork before a doctor sees you as this allows us the opportunity to get to know our patient and their family and ensure that we can provide person centred care. The nursing admission document allows us to gain a hollistic view of our patient and their needs.

Unfortunately there may be times where we need to move you rooms and this can be for a number of reasons including clinical need or for us to undertake routine maintenance work to the room. I would like to apologise if the reason for the move was not given to you.

I am sorry to hear you were missed off of doctor's ward rounds and I have fed this back to the medical team. We appreciate that having an update in regards to your child's progress and care is important to you and I am sorry if you did not feel you were given this at times.

I have discussed with the ward team that you were not informed you were going to be discharged by a member of the nursing team. I am sorry this was not the case.

With regards to when your daughter will have her surgery if you could email me with her full name and date of birth I will discuss this with the Clinical Director and ask for someone to contact you to provide an update. My email address is lewis.doult@ggc.scot.nhs.uk.

Although I appreciate some of your stay was less than satisfactory, I am really pleased to hear that you felt our staff are amazing and that the ward was spotless. I have shared this with our ward team who will be pleased to hear this.

Feedback from our patients and their families is really important to us so that we can continue to provide the best possible service. Thank you for taking your time to tell us about your experience.
