"There were complications"

About: Grantham & District Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I had a major knee operation at Grantham Orthopoedic Hospital

I was expecting a basic operation and to be out within 2 days instead of which there were complications and 2 blood transfusions.

The problem was the pain. The nursing staff did not know how to get this under control because they did not do these major ops normally so i was told and did not appear to know how to cope.

By the time the pain had got unbearable and to the point i wanted to die it then took time to get me onto a level where i could cope with the pain.

Only one nurse seemed to have any understanding - that nurse was amazing.

Dear Cliff40

I am so sorry to hear you felt you had complications, but this can happen at times when there may have been some blood loss, which again is natural and not usually classed as a complication. Depending on what your bloods were like pre operatively then we sometimes need to replace it to help with wound healing and to make you generally feel stronger.

We are very used to major operations on here and I apologise for this information being given to you, but we do orthopaedic operations every day and are very used to looking after them. I also apologise if you were told the wrong information and felt that we couldn’t cope with this type of surgery as I would really like to assure you that we can and have been doing for many years with really good feedback from patients and most of my staff are now fully Level one trained for these types of operations with close monitoring of patients.

The pain, again I can only apologise for not getting this under control quicker but I am pleased to see we did manage that and it is really sad for me to read that you felt only one nurse had any understanding as this is not the feedback we are used to receiving.

I will share this with the team and we will share it at our safety huddles and learn from it and thank you for posting it.

I hope you are recovering well at home now and if I had known I would have come to see you on the ward to discuss your anxieties

KR

Julie
