"It might be prudent to provide the necessary facilities"

About: North Devon District Hospital / Audiology

(as a service user),

I attended an outpatients appointment today and was seen by a very able student supervised by a staff member. The purpose of my visit was to undergo a scheduled hearing check.

After going through the preliminary questions, the audiologist checked my ears for wax. Wax was present in my right ear and therefore the test was halted pending clearance of the wax.

I was surprised that that could not be done there and then and the hearing test completed. I assume that there is quite a high probability that a patient attending for a hearing test could have wax in one or both ears. Therefore, in my opinion, it might be prudent to provide the necessary facilities, or location, to enable the clearance procedure to be completed there and then.

As it is, I now await further appointments to syringe my right ear and complete the hearing test. An apparent waste of resources.

The student audiologist was fine and I wish them well in their finals.
