"GP practice refused to register newborn daughter and myself"

About: General practices in Lanarkshire

(as the patient),

I gave birth one week ago to an early term baby by emergency c-section after 96 hours of labour.

Having arrived home after seven days in hospital, my mother in law went to our local GP practice to ask for registration forms for myself and my newborn daughter only to be told they are not taking on new patients at the moment.

I do not drive and given the surgery I have just had cannot make a longer journey to a GP practice further away. This practice is a few streets away from me and walking distance to take my baby to in case of illness or concern. I am otherwise a very healthy person so feel that an extra body would not clog their books up.

My partner works far from home so if either of us were to take unwell and need to be seen by a GP we would be unable to get there promptly.

Is the register closed at the moment or is there any leeway? I have been told they must inform us if the register is closed and if they haven’t then they must allow us to register there as soon as possible.

Dear Mumren,

Firstly, congratulations on the birth of your daughter! I hope you are both doing well and settling in to family life at home.

Thank you for sharing your story on Care Opinion.

I am sorry to hear you were unable to register yourself or daughter with your local GP. GP’s are independent contractors and are responsible for investigating and responding to any concerns a person may have about the service. They are not registered to respond directly to feedback through Care Opinion. As Care Opinion is an anonymous site, can I please invite you to contact the practice manager who would be able to answer your specific questions within your story. Alternatively, please contact Primary Care Patient Affairs, so they can understand all the issue in more detail, get back to you personally.

I have included their contact details.

PatientAffairs.Primarycare@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk Tel no. 01698 752800 Option 2

Kind regards,

Jenni
