"My treatment journey has been seamless and professional"

About: Arbroath Infirmary / Minor Injuries Ninewells Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as the patient),

Following a fall, I attended the Minor Injury Unit in Arbroath Infirmary and was diagnosed with two fractured wrists. Advice was sought from the Orthopaedic Registrar and I was directed to the fracture clinic in Ninewells Hospital and into the care of Prof Jariwala, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, and the orthopaedic team.

The Orthopaedic Registrar arrived, shared the X-rays with myself and my husband, fully explained the nature and extent of my injuries and discussed the proposed course of action which included surgery.  I was admitted to Ward 19, Bay 3, where the staff were welcoming and made me comfortable. They ensured all my clinical and personal needs were met, since my hands were immobile, and offered compassionate support.

The theatre staff were reassuring and efficient and the Consultant Anaesthetist and Surgeon explained the procedures clearly along with anticipated outcomes.  Post-operatively the medical staff were visible and accessible on the ward and the nursing staff were solicitous in their care.

Communications between the disciplines has been excellent and reassuring. I was offered early rehabilitation advice from both the medical and nursing staff and the senior occupational therapist which allowed me to start the recovery process immediately.

Follow-up review at the Fracture Clinic has been prompt and all notes and X-rays available to support discussion. Prof Jariwala has been thorough and offered me excellent advice on post-operative rehabilitation techniques that have resulted in me mobilising more quickly and comfortably than I could have anticipated.

My treatment journey from arrival to discharge has been seamless and professional with high levels of technical skill and expertise available.

Every member of staff I have encountered should be proud of themselves. The care and treatment they are delivering, not only to me but to others I observed in the ward and clinics, is second to none.

I have received compassionate, empathetic care which, along with warm humour, has set me on a sound path for a quick and successful recovery.

Dear DM100

I am sorry to hear that you have had a fall which has resulted in nasty injuries. I hope you are recovering well and not too uncomfortable. I am pleased to hear that your journey through all the disciplines has been seamless and the individual departments have all communicated and interacted well to facilitate your care and treatment. It is great to hear that Arbroath minor injuries were able to pinpoint your injuries and then make sure you got referred on to the appropriate specialities.

Thank you very much for taking the time to post this care opinion. As healthcare professionals its lovely for us to receive such positive feedback. We all hope that you are feeling much better soon.

Thanks

Morag Crighton, advanced nurse practitioner, Arbroath Minor Injuries
