"Anxiety about hysterectomy"

About: Pilgrim Hospital / Gynaecology

(as a service user),

Pre operation morning.

I was terrified and my anxiety had gone through the roof. I pre warned staff at my MRSA , height and weight pre check how terrified I was and would be.

On arrival to the ward they would not allow my husband in because I was in a women's only ward. It took an awful lot of convincing for me to enter the ward. I couldn't cope with being surrounded by other people and was moved into an isolated room and left. This didn't help my anxiety and I had to have additional sedation before going into surgery. If the staff had listened and let my husband stay to keep me calm  this wouldn't have happened.

On the positive,  the surgery and post operation care was amazing and all staff worked really hard to help and support me.

Dear microscopiumjj

Thank you for taking time to share your experience, we are sorry that we were not able to meet your specific needs prior to surgery. Routinely patients do not come to Ward 1B prior to their operation and as such nursing staff were adhering to our usual ward visiting restrictions which in your case was not appropriate or caring. Please accept my sincere apologies on behalf of myself and the nursing team on Ward 1B.

Regards

Michelle Caldwell
