"Appalled by experience in A&E"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Accident & emergency Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Children's Ward

(as a parent/guardian),

My 15 weeks old baby first of all had to wait 8 hours between triage until being seen by a doctor. In A&E we were seen by a staff member who wasn't sure what to do, so went and spoke to their supervisor for the shift, who to my knowledge was in charge of the full A&E doctor team.

The treatment that I was told to give my baby for the next hour was basically torturing her, I told them several times I had been told my baby was not allowed water, yet I had to force it down her throat with a syringe! An hour later the doctor reappeared, after no-one checking for that whole hour, and described two very scary experiences through this water syringing as "funny periods".

After being admitted to the children's ward, I as well as my mother was informed that these "funny episodes" my daughter had in A&E were in fact that for the reasons I explained several times as to why my baby was not allowed water, the water caused my 15 week old week daughter to stop breathing twice.

I went to A&E for help and the advice given could have killed my daughter. I am extremely traumatised by the experience and appalled - I feel physically sick that I could have left A&E with no daughter due to a doctors advice.

Dear Distressedmum

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience at our Accident and Emergency Department, may I take this opportunity to apologise that this was your experience, I can only imagine how upsetting and distressing this must have been for you and your little girl.

It is always a worrying time when our children are unwell, it must have been very distressing for you to sit with your daughter during that period of time. Our staff will be upset on reading your story, in particular the concerns you raised regarding the advice provided to you. It is never our intention to cause added stress or upset to our patients or relatives during their time with us.

We would like to look into the concerns you have raised, to do this we will need some information. Can I please ask you to contact Kirsty Meikle, Clinical Nurse Manager, Emergency Department/Minor Injuries Unit on 01324 567461 or you can email kirsty.meikle@nhs.scot.

I hope your daughter is feeling better.

Kind regards

Pauline Donnelly
