"Feeling unheard, unimportant and completely misunderstood."

About: Royal Cornhill Hospital / Adult mental health

(as the patient),

A year or two ago I requested to be tested for ADHD. This was not an easy step for me to take but after return to education later in life I realised that there was something really wrong with how I function in a learning environment. And the more I saw the more I realised that it was not just that environment that I was showing signs of some very problematic behaviour....anyway I prepared for the long wait as I know that NHS MH (from experience working there) and I knew it would take time.

Fast forward to my actual date of appointment with the doctor. I felt unheard, unimportant and to be honest completely misunderstood. They  heard the words "childhood trauma" and decided yep that must be it....no testing done which I had waited years for, no other input. Just boom not ADHD.  They could tell over a 40 min video call, without testing, that I was ADHD free. Does this sound as stupid to you as it does me?

I was sent to trauma therapy, and it really has helped with the childhood trauma...not the bloody ADHD symptoms though....strange that, the child wounds are on the mend but I still feel  royally screwed at college. Odd how that wasn't magically fixed by therapy. I want the testing done I requested so that I can receive a clear yes or no and maybe get support from my educators. I want to be taken seriously as a grown ass woman and not feel gaslit by a service I was proud to be part of and still am.

Also there is a differente between no issues as a child and have no memory of it. Something the trauma therapy has aided in recovering...and yes there was massive causes for concern back then too....but women don't get ADHD do we.

I am past frustrated and thus is hindering my current mental health development.

I have nothing but wonderful things to say about the Dr I see for trauma, who has really been a massive support. Such a shame the same can't be said for the other.

Dear Noot 88,

Thank you for sharing your story. We apologize that your experience has not been positive. As an organisation we take feedback seriously as it enables us to look at where we can improve. It would be really helpful if we could discuss your experience further and see where we can help as a service. Therefore could you contact me on julia.wells@nhs.scot and we can arrange a suitable time to discuss. If you would prefer not to discuss, please be assured as a service we recognise a number of challenges around our ADHD pathway that we are actively trying to improve.

Kind Regards

Julia
