I was attending Edinburgh Infirmary for a pre-op assessment for surgery to my back. I was early for my appointment but was taken straight away. The nurses carrying out the various procedures were very professional and explained each process. They were very thorough with the assessment and were concerned when checking my pulse rate and that this was extremely low at 35.
The nurse asked her colleague to check this with her. She explained why she would speak to a doctor about her concern, but reassured me that the doctor would provide more information.
An ECG and CT scan were arranged and later a cardiac doctor came down to speak to me. He explained that there was a problem with my heart and that I would need to be admitted to have a pace maker fitted. He was very clear about the situation and that this procedure would be carried out today or tomorrow.
Although this was a bit of a shock, I reflected on how I had been feeling and understood the need for this procedure to be carried out quickly. I was well looked after by the nurses and doctors throughout my stay. Practice was outstanding, communication and care were excellent and I wanted to give my thanks to all involved.
Although my back surgery did not go ahead, these pre-op checks probably saved my life, identifying a total heart block. Thank you so much.
