"Poor experience at Clinical Assessment Unit"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Clinical assessment unit

(as the patient),

I was referred by GP to the above with serious sepsis due to an infection and was told that I would be put on IV antibiotics when I get there.  I arrived and the staff member at the desk didn’t have a clue - first of all they got my name wrong then I was told to sit in the patient area chairs and my wife wasn’t allowed to wait, although there were other families with their family with them.

I sat in the seat for over two hours with no IV antibiotics,  I eventually asked at the desk what was happening and again they didn’t have a clue.  I wait for another two to three hours and asked a nurse at the desk what was happening and my paperwork couldn’t be found.

I was then taken for my obs without being triaged.  I gave blood and when the results came back I was told that my inflammatory markers were raised a bit.  I also had an ecg to be told it was ok and I could go home.  I was still feeling unwell and went to my GP today, they asked if I got IV antibiotics to which I said no.  I was also told that my inflammatory markers were over 100 when they should be between 0-5 and my ecg heart rate was high.  I am always full of praise for the NHS where it is due but this time I and my family have been let down.

Dear Smudger69

Thank you for taking the time and sharing your experience whilst in the clinical assessment unit.

It is always difficult to read when patients feel we have let them down and I must apologise that on this occasion you felt that we have not met the standards of care we expect for our patients.

I would be grateful if I could ask you to get in touch with me, as I would like to look further into what happened during your time within the clinical assessment unit.

You can contact me on 01324 567472 or pamela.scott@nhs.scot

Best wishes

pamela
