"Why are we waiting to be discharged?"

About: University Hospital Ayr / Cardiology

(as a relative),

My mother was admitted to A and E in February and has been in hospital since waiting to be reviewed and discharged after progressing very well.

She has received good care from nursing staff and she has been looked after in Station 14 but unfortunately has been waiting for a Cardiology Review for nearly 2 weeks now. My mum is well now, and she is blocking a bed that could be useful to someone else in need of it. Also, she is vulnerable and we are worried she will get a hospital acquired infection if remains longer. There is no communication why she is not being seen or when she will be seen. It is getting very frustrating for her and for me. She is much better of at home now and she needs to get better as her immunity is already low.

Many thanks for taking the time to raise your concern with us. I sincerely apologise for the delay in your mum's specialist referral and subsequent review.

I have spoken to the ward and the cardiology review has taken place and I believe your mum is planned for discharge today.

I will pick up this delay with the ward medical team and Senior Charge Nurse directly to understand why the delay occurred in your mum's treatment this is certainly not the level of care we strive to achieve.

I'm pleased your mum is being discharge and I wish her an ongoing recovery.

Kind regards

Karen McCormick

Chief Nurse

Update posted by Frustrated.com (a relative)

Thank you for getting back to me promptly and also chasing up the review for my dear mother.

We were both delighted to find out that cardiologist finally reviewed her and discharged her today. She is so happy to be at home and also wants to take this moment to also say a massive thank you to all of the nurses in Station 12 who took care of her and all the doctors who have dealt with my mum since arriving to the hospital.

She was given a thorough check and also rapid response to make her airways better so she could breathe properly again.

Thank you once again Karen for all your help, it is much appreciated.
