"My Hip replacement experience"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Acute Stroke Unit (Ward 6) University Hospital Hairmyres / Day Surgery

(as the patient),

I underwent total hip replacement at Hairmyres Hospital in February 2023.

From the minute I walked into the reception at the Day Surgery Unit until I left for home the next day, I felt as if I had gone private.

The nurse who checked me in, gave me my hospital gowns, took my blood pressure etc was extremely polite, professional, friendly, courteous and aware of how I was feeling.

I then spoke to the surgeon who was going to perform my operation, we had a brief conversation and during that conversation, when he explained the procedure, he put me totally at ease.

My next conversation was with the anesthetist, who explained all of my options, listened to my choice and again, put me at ease.

After my operation, I was transferred to ward 7, where I was made to feel very comfortable and treated extremely well.

I cannot speak highly enough of the team in ward 7, I was nervous and a bit confused as to what to expect with my new hip situation. The team were brilliant, they made me feel at ease and within a very short time, they had me up on a walking frame to get me on my feet, and after a time on the walking frame, I was then put on to walking sticks. Walking along the ward and eventually onto a set of stairs.

I was allowed to go home later that day as I passed their assessment of my walking ability.

I was discharged with all of the information I required to continue my rehabilitation at home. I also had all of the medication I required for when I got home.

I cannot speak highly enough of the team that took me through my experience, I was nervous and afraid of what I was about to go through, but this team of trained professional staff made my experience easy and totally  manageable .

I would like to thank each and every one of them, they made me feel important, at ease and took a lot of the worry and fear away from me.

I feel as if I had gone private, such was the care, professionalism, courtesy and dedication from this team of people.

Thank you.

Dear bonanzagh44

What a pleasure it has been to read your comments. Thank you for taking the time to detail your experience and explain how different staff members supported you through your hip replacement journey. It is clear to see how the multidisciplinary team worked together to support you and involved you in care decisions.

All staff will be delighted to read your comments and they will be shared widely.

The NHS does remain under pressure, however such lovely feedback gives a boost to staff that work so hard to provide optimum care. Every patient is important to us and it really is heart warming to read that the team members reduced your fear and provided such professional care.

It also sounds like you had a very positive attitude towards recovery and managed to achieve early mobility goals. A credit to you too.

I hope that your recovery journey continues to be a smooth one. Thank you again for your comments.

Kind regards and many thanks

Lise
