"Breast cancer journey"

About: Gartnavel General Hospital / Breast Clinic Gartnavel General Hospital / General Surgery (ward 4a) New Victoria Hospital / Breast Clinic West Scotland Breast Screening Centre / Diagnostics

(as the patient),

I went for a mammogram at the Scottish Breast Screening Centre, Glasgow in October 2022. I received a letter saying that the results were unclear and I would need further tests. The receptionist, Doctor and all clinicians at the Breast Clinic in Nelson Mandela Square were so supportive when I went for a biopsy and scans. These resulted in my needing surgery.

I was seen by breast surgeon and breast cancer nurse in November 2022 at Gartnavel Hospital. Both explained exactly what would happen with the lumpectomy surgery and could not have been more supportive.

The surgery happened very quickly at Gartnavel Hospital. All staff whom I dealt with on the day in December 2022 from Admissions Ward to anaesthetists,  nursing + theatre staff were all exceptionally helpful and empathic and I was discharged that afternoon.

My follow-up meeting for the results with my nurse at Gartnavel was also very reassuring and I felt very well cared for. I am exceptionally grateful for the professional and nurturing care I received.

The one sticking point about Gartnavel Hospital was the abrupt and abrasive nature of the Reception team for Clinic 1. As the first point of contact for Cancer Care, it would be so much better if the Receptionists could have training on how to deal with sensitive issues with new and existing patients. At several appointment times, I stood at the desk for Clinic 1 for minutes before they acknowledged me and then their manner came across to me was dismissive. This is in complete opposition to the entire Cancer Care staff and it would be so helpful to have that behaviour be more sympathetic. Patients going into Cancer Care are understandably anxious.

Post-surgery, I had an appointment with a Radiographer at the New Victoria Hospital. They were reassuring and explained everything I needed to know about the radiotherapy treatment I would be receiving in January 2023. Again, I felt totally cared for and the Receptionist who works at the clinic was sympathetic and understanding. They even asked me if I would be okay to attend an early morning clinic post-radiotherapy to see the rediographer again.

My radiotherapy letter came through with times for my appointments at The Beatson. Again, the entire staff from receptionists to radiographers were encouraging, understanding and benevolent.

One of the radiographers called me to check on my progress and they were sensitive to my concerns (burning sensation, pain and exhaustion).

I am exceptionally grateful for the care I have received and look forward to having a clean bill of health!

Dear R Purvis

Thank you for taking time to share your experience with us. It is only when patients share experiences that we are aware of the need for improvement or of a job well done - both of which we learn from equally.

I am delighted to hear the service you received from the West of Scotland Breast Screening Team met your expectations and will share your kind words with all.

May I take this opportunity to wish you well with your ongoing treatment and hope your "clean bill of health" is just around the corner.

Best wishes

Marion Inglis, Centre Manager
