"Praise for the staff on the stroke ward"

About: Altnagelvin Area Hospital / Neurology Causeway Hospital / Accident & Emergency

(as the patient),

I lost power in my right arm at the end of January  whilst at work. I attended hospital and was referred to Altnagelvin Area Hospital.  Two days later I had scheduled MRI, CT scans, USS Dopplers, bloods etc.

I was diagnosed with Acute left frontal lacunar infarction an old right frontal parietal and occipital lobe infarction and an old cerebellar hemispheric lacunar infarction. The latter two, I was not aware of.

I was kept in overnight and released the next day. The care I received from the staff at Altnagelvin hospital was second  to none.

I had intially attended  Causeway Hospital  and after a 6 hour wait, I was sent home. No bloods were taken in Causeway Hospital, no scans were completed, despite telling a doctor what had happened and them acknowledging that I may have had a stroke.

I cannot praise the staff enough on the stroke ward at Altnagelvin Hospital. The level of care was outstanding.

Care is continuing and it was a wake up call for me.

Hi wellington01

I know the journey you had. I am glad I was able to get you seen in our TIA service and from that be admitted to the stroke ward. I know we were able to get your tests done quickly and you had a short stay. Thank you for taking the time to send in lovely feedback about your stay in the stroke ward and this will be shared with the teams. Wishing you well.

Valerie Thompson

Stroke Nurse
