"GP Out of Hours"

About: NHS 24 / NHS 24 (111 service) Royal Alexandra Hospital / GP Out of Hours

(as a relative),

My very young breast-fed granddaughter was unwell for over 24 hours with a high temperature, and her mum was also ill with symptoms of a cold but she tested positive for Covid 19. The baby was very miserable and would not settle at all, despite her getting paracetamol and ibuprofen. NHS 24 kindly arranged an appointment to see the GP that night. As it happened, baby began to settle a bit, so we phoned NHS 24 again to cancel the appointment, but were advised to attend anyway. This was OK as she was definitely not at all well. Mum was not able to go in but when we arrived (on time) we were told that there were two people ahead of us. Unfortunately we were not admitted to the GP until the early hours of the next day. I just feel that some consideration should be made to accommodate the breast-feeding needs, and had we been asked to show up at the time we were seen, that would have been OK too. As for the consultation, my only disappointment was that the pulse oximeter could not be made to work.

Dear Washbucket

I'm so sorry to learn your very young granddaughter was unwell. With her mum being unwell also, it sounds as though it's been a bit of a tough time. I hope they have both improved. It sounds as though you are doing a sterling job in supporting your daughter at this time.

I reply in relation to the contact made with NHS 24. I see we recognised the your granddaughter needed to be seen face to face and made the necessary arrangements. Even although the baby began to settle, it's always reassuring to get babies and children checked out.

If you wish to share any more detail about your call to NHS 24, it would be good to hear from you. You can call me on 07814 299944 or email Patient.Experience@nhs24.scot.nhs.uk

With best wishes to you all meantime.

Take care

Shona
