"Suffering muscle wasting after being in intensive care"

About: Edgware Community Hospital Neurological Rehabilitation Centre / Inpatient Unit

(as a service user),

I was suddenly taken ill with pneumonia then sepsis and spent 8 weeks in Intensive Care. I remember waking up unable to move or speak and with lots of tubes attached, including a tracheostomy. It was frightening, the staff in Intensive Care had saved my life and looked after me with kindness and skill.

After a while I transferred to a medical ward and then to Neurological Rehab Unit. Although I’d had physiotherapy in hospital, the rehab unit had the facilities to provide much more intensive support and I was quickly able to stand, then walk. It’s an excellent facility, with caring staff. There’s a real sense of community and the patients thrive in this atmosphere and support each other in their recovery.
