"I hope no one else gets treated the same way"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / Day Surgery Unit Royal Alexandra Hospital / Medical Assessment Unit (MAU)

(as the patient),

Firstly I was admitted to MAU. I was transferred to the Surgical Day Unit, to which the staff were given the wrong handover about myself. Staff weren’t informed that I was experiencing D&V. Not once was I isolated due to this while awaiting samples to be resulted.

I feel the Surgical Day Unit is not fit for purpose. The staff never knew where anything was, and it seemed like there was no obvious nurse in charge. Domestics hadn’t even been round in 2 days to clean the unit. We were left for nearly a full day without even toilet paper. The ward didn’t even have one shower that we could use for basic hygiene needs. Especially when having D&V.

Staff were extremely rude towards not only myself but to elderly patients. One lady kept shouting on a nurse throughout the night as she was needing the toilet. I handed her the nurse call buzzer to save her shouting and the nursing staff had just ignored her, saying she had a continence pad on. I explained that the day staff had the patient up on a commode during the day, she had been continent, but they just ignored me. The lady continued to shout for the toilet and the staff continued to ignore her. Another lady in the room had asked for a blanket and got told no, therefore she slept with her jacket on all night. I wasn’t aware of that until the morning.

Lastly, when getting discharged. I was told to go home and get better as they needed the bed. I had been receiving painkillers and antiemetics and was told by nursing staff I wasn’t to be discharged with any medication and I was to go to the chemist and ask for my own cocodamol. I also asked for some incontinence pads to take home as often I was caught short going to the toilet, they gave me three and told me that was enough. It was embarrassing enough having to ask for them as a young lady but I felt absolutely humiliated. As a nurse myself, I have a duty of care to report these members of staff. I am absolutely appalled by their behaviour, and I hope no one else gets treated the same way by them.

Dear casingze98

First, I would like to say how I sorry I am that you had such a negative experience. The issues that you are raising are very concerning and are well below the standards of care that we would aim to provide to our patients.

I am really sorry that you had a cause to raise these issues and for the distress and upset this has caused.

I would be grateful if you could get in touch so that we can discuss this further. My email address is: Gillian.Kelly@ggc.scot.nhs.uk

Thank you

Gillian
