"A poorly mum and an accident whilst in A&E"

About: North Devon District Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as a relative),

I was in A&E with my mum who had been referred by her doctor for admission. We were informed that there was a 30 hour wait for a bed. My mum was poorly and in her late seventies - there was no way she could sit in a chair for 30 hours. I explained this to the receptionist and asked if we could wait for 8 of those 30 hours at home so at least she could lie down. The receptionist was so kind and asked the nurse in charge if they could find her a bed in minors, which she did. We were so grateful and my mum so needed to lie down. Pillows were like gold dust, but a lovely student nurse found us one to save my son a 50 mile round trip bringing one from home. I managed to find two blankets on a trolley so she was quite comfortable.

Just as I was about to leave, I perched on an office chair. Because it was on wheels, it flew across the room behind me, I fell and whacked my head on a desk. I had a nasty head wound. A doctor must’ve heard the commotion because when I opened the door, he was there. He looked after me so well and 4 hours later was the one who stitched me up.

Thank you for taking the time to send us your feedback. It sounds like you and your Mum had an eventful time whilst in the Emergency Department.

I am pleased to hear of the way in which the staff supported you both throughout your stay.
