"Delayed transfer to mainland hospital because of lack of beds"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Orthopaedics (Wards 10a, 10b, 10c &10d) Western Isles Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as a relative),

My 90 year old father broke his right hip five days ago at home. He was admitted to Western Isles hospital where they confirmed the next day he had a broken right hip.

Due to my father having had a hip replacement previously the hospital is not able to perform this type of operation.  The plan was to transfer him to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital when a bed would become available.

We have reached five days later and my father remains in the local hospital with no prospect of a bed becoming available.

The nursing care has been amazing and I have only praise for his care in the ward. However despite pain relief he remains in pain. My father also has dementia and tries to get out of bed.

I met with a junior doctor who said they were looking at all options but the fact remains that my father is not getting treatment.

Dear Icelandic angel,

Thank you for taking the time to comment on care opinion and for your positive feedback and kind words regarding the nursing care your father received on the ward, I will ensure to pass this onto the team.

I apologise for the delay in your fathers transfer to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Glasgow for further treatment and any distress this may have caused him or your family. I have taken the opportunity to discuss your fathers care with the Senior Charge Nurse on Surgical Ward and our Clinical Support Nurses who manage beds and co-ordinate with mainland hospitals regarding transfers.

They have advised that a bed was available in the QEUH for your father however his transfer was delayed due to adverse weather, icy conditions and industrial action affecting the availability of an air ambulance. I understand your father was transferred to the QEUH in Glasgow over the weekend, I hope he is recovering well.

Should you wish to discuss further please feel free to contact me by emailing frances.robertson2@nhs.scot or by calling 01851 704704 ext 2293

Many Thanks

Frances Robertson

Dear Icelandic angel,

Thank you taking time to share your feedback at what must have been a very worrying time. In addition to the response posted above by our colleagues at NHS Western Isles allow me to add our own apologies for the delay your father experienced, and I hope he has a swift and full recovery from his broken hip.

Kind regards,

Lisa Martin, Patient Experience Public Involvement Manager, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde health Board.
