"Visiting A&E two times following arm fractures."

About: Chesterfield Royal Hospital / Accident and emergency Chesterfield Royal Hospital / Paediatrics Chesterfield Royal Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as a parent/guardian),

I visited Chesterfield Hospital with my daughter. She initially broke her arm in July, this was a simple fracture, and we had a 5-hour wait in A&E to have a back slab. We were seen almost immediately by triage nurses and they administered pain medication, so the wait was manageable. We were seen a week later in the fracture clinic, where my daughter was put in Pop. 4 weeks later, this was removed and she soon re-broke her arm in splint, this time more severely.

We attended A&E and they immediately identified and escalated this, we saw a nurse for observations, pain killers and initial management. This nurse put us at ease, was kind, compassionate and generally a joy. I wish I knew his name, he was able to establish a relationship with us both immediately and told us the next steps. Following seeing him, we were taken to a room in ED. They monitored and managed my daughter's pain, and later reset her arm with further monitoring by orthopaedics and pediatric nurses. It felt like it all happened very quickly, and they were fantastic throughout, explained everything thoroughly and managed me as much as they managed my daughter. I felt we were given options and they even explained when they were changing shift.

What was a horrible experience as a mum, seeing your child in pain and scared and not being able to do anything, was eased by all the staff at Chesterfield A&E, Orthopaedics and Paediatrics. I cannot compliment them enough, even the cleaners who stopped for a much needed chat and to offer a cup of tea, they all individually made a positive impact on our visit. I will never forget how wonderful they are and this shows how efficiently they run their services to make sure they can see those who need seeing as soon as practical. A wonderful team in a wonderful hospital.

Dear Acceptablelife810

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. I am sure that this was an incredibly worrying time for you as a parent.

It is really pleasing to read such positive comments about your daughters care and treatment and I do hope that she is recovering well.

I will ensure that your kind comments are passed on to the teams who cared for her and I hope that you have a very Merry Christmas.

With kindest regards

Rachel Walker - Patient Experience Advisor
