"Labour/ward care/breast feeding support"

About: Aberdeen Maternity Hospital / Obstetrics (Maternity care)

(as a service user),

We were so looked after and well informed from start to finish and the staff throughout my labour were brilliant, was a bit of a blur for me but I'm sure the midwife who birthed our girl was Olivia and she was so attentive, lots of laughs in between the crying and the screaming!, I was then taken to ashgrove where again the care followed through, I was looked after by a lovely midwife called Natasha and again so sweet and caring. The ward staff were lovely and very attentive, however if I had one complaint was in the night, I was very tired so I buzzed for some support with feeding and they took a long time to come and when the lady did arrive. She told me just take my baby to the breast and she left and as a new breast feeder and new mum I was a little taken back by this, so I sat with baby a bit lost if I'm honest.

The next day, I had a midwife Hannah and she was just as lovely as the girl the day before. I spoke to her about my feeding, and she gave me lots of good advice and put me forward to the infant feeding team, I thought great. I then met the lovely Amy who was so lovely, she spoke about hand expressing which I was completely useless at but got me going, and I felt so confident and positive, sadly it was the end of her shift, but she gave me that first little confidence boost, which was so very needed.

The night-time came and again I felt extremely scared, she wasn't feeding still and again I buzzed for support this time a lady (no name showing) and physically put my baby on, given my little girl fed but there was no help given really, I felt as if I was disturbing them, so that was the 'quick solution'. Next day I was eager for home but my midwife Hannah again suggested some help again from the infant feeding team, this time I seen Tyler, she was also lovely, she sat with me during a feed and really boosted my confidence, I expressed that I felt a bit uncomfortable with the position I was using which was rugby ball, so she introduced me to the laid back, never heard of this before but gave me so much freedom and allowed me to really relax and enjoy my feeding. They really made me feel heard with my feeding, the night staff over my stay I feel just gave the 'can't be bothered' attitude which is a shame really because the day staff were the complete opposite.

Overall my stay was really positive and I can't thank the Ashgrove girls and the feeding team enough, you really are all angels!!

Dear giraffetz69,

Congratulations on the birth of your baby and thanks for taking the time to provide your feedback regarding your stay.

I am delighted to hear that you had some positive experiences with your care and received the support you required from both ward staff and the infant feeding team. You feedback will be shared with the named individuals which they will appreciate.

However, It is disappointing to hear about the night staff's attitude and that they were unsupportive. This is not what we would expect from our team. Please accept my apologies.

Best wishes

Corinne Mackie
