"My late mother."

About: Ysbyty Glan Clwyd / Older people's healthcare

(as a service user),

In July of 2020 mum had a fall at home. She had been to the GP earlier in the day who thought it was dehydration. Anyway, after the fall mum was unable to weight bear on her leg. 111 was called at about 5:00pm. At 11:00pm the ambulance arrived checked mum over and suspected her leg was broken. Taken to YGC.  I rang at 5:00am the next morning to see how mum was. I was told she was fine no broken bones. I asked when I could pick her up and was told to phone back later.

I called back spoke to a different nurse and was  told she was fine   When I asked when mum was to be released there was laughter on other end of phone. I asked what was funny. No reply, just that they would ask the doctor to phone me.  This was A.M.U. No call received. Phoned A.M.U the next day to be told she wasn't there  Mum had been moved to Ward 2.

She stopped eating did not like the food. I asked for her to come home but was told no she was to unwell. It turns out she had a CT scan - not that I was told. I asked to speak to her consultant was told they were busy they have patients to see. Mum developed pneumonia and then Sepsis which I wasn't told about. They were pumping her full of I.V antibiotics which I feel hastened her demise.

Call from Consultant who believed Mum was suffering from either Stomach or Lung Cancer.  It was difficult to get through on phones  - I was told by one nurse I was stopping her doing her job. Not told about face time. I feel it is very likely Mum was not turned on a regular basis as she had become bed bound. In five weeks a pressure sore that went from being minor with our care to being down to the bone. A disc in her spine collapsed. Her morphine was not given - she had been on it long term for a number of fractures following Radiotherapy at YGC.

She was not clean.  On a visit mum wanted the toilet and a nurse tried to get her on a bedpan even though she was screaming in pain. We used patient liaison after mum passed. Then went to Ombudsman. Following his advice my brother contacted PALS. With a different company. That was in  May. He had a letter to say the investigation would take longer than expected. We are now almost in December and are still none the wiser

As a family we would like to gain some answers as to cause of death as originally there were 3, none of which were correct. Not one person medically trained picked up on Mum's Cirrhosis of the liver because she did not fall into the criteria for Cirrhosis.  We are sorry means nothing.

NB all the staff need to be explained to that people with Downs Syndrome like my Sister are not ill. They have an inherited condition.
