"Orthopaedics & my treatment"

About: Falkirk Community Hospital / ReACH Falkirk Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Orthopaedics Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Urgent Care Centre

(as the patient),

I had a fall last September double fracture (wrist & upper arm)taken to forth valley. At time of admission I should have had my break repaired instead I was left initially in a surgical ward, plaster on wrist & a brace put on arm and sent home.

Concerns raised with relevant professionals that I have MS & my healing would be poor. I was seen at Orthopeadics by several Consultants & Juniors, there was no consistent care, the brace was taken off early & no way for the bone to heal together. I was in terrible pain.

I had fantastic support by ReACH Team, my Physiotherapist also recognised the difficulties that I was facing. No direct physio could be undertaken as the bone was not healing well. I had to ask to see a Snr Consultant, this went on for a year. I was informed I would be operated on, then told after a year that this could not happen and advised more harm than good.

After this year long wait, I am now getting physio. However, early intervention & support would have made my outcomes more positive than putting me through pain & discomfort. I can honestly say that I am seriously disappointed in Orthopaedics and Traima and how I was treated. On the day of my scheduled operation, I sat for five hours waiting to be operated on to then be told no, and even the black marker was put on my arm.

Thereafter, I contacted ReACH Team not the hospital for additional physio as I had no physio for approx 1 year due to the break. I was optimistic about starting physio a year after accident. I am doing physio now. The Physio service that I received was fantastic and I can’t praise my physio enough who guided me through a very difficult time. I have been a patient of FVRH for over ten years and always had a great service however, this experience with them was appalling except for the support from the ReACH Team. As I said earlier I cannot praise the staff from ReACH enough for the support & guidance they provided to me on my recovery.
