About: Southampton General Hospital

Anything else?

I have just returned after 4+ hours in A&E at Southampton General with my 8 year Autistic son. He had a Head Injury which knocked him unconscious and the local walk-in centre were concerned enough to send us to the hospital. We waited over an hour to be seen by Triage who told us that the longest anyone had waited that evening was 1hr27mins and what we had already waited counted towards that. Plus the fact she could feel a 'dent' which she was concerned about. We then waited a further 2 and a half hours. By which time my Autistic, SPD 8year old had had enough. We were then led to a cubicle, a consultant 'looked' at him for less than 30 seconds then we were given an advice sheet and told 'you're free to go', 'come back if he displays any unusual behaviour' Helllo, he is autistic with sensory processing disorder - he could break his leg and think he has lost an eyelash. This is not acceptable. I am also forwarding a copy of this to the Autistic Society and taking further advice. You had better hope that my son is ok or God help you.

We were very sorry to read that this has been your experience whilst visiting the Emergency Department with your son. We do appreciate how important it is to make 'reasonable adjustments' particularly for children with autism. We would welcome the opportunity to talk to you about this and if you would like to do so please do make contact through Patient Support Services on telephone 023 8079 6325 or e-mail patientsupportservices@uhs.nhs.uk
