"Dignity?"

About: Diana, Princess Of Wales Hospital

Anything else?

How appalling to visit a family member who suffers from a dementia to find her in a six bedded unit with other patients. She was dressed in an open-backed hospital gown, no underwear on and seated on an incontinence pad, on looking around, all the patients were similarly attired, male and female staff members were in attendance of and on throughout my visit and not one paid any attention to this, is this the normal way to treat elderly people? What happened to dignity and respect ward C5?

I'm sorry to hear about your experience on ward C5. Our aim is to provide dignity and the best quality of care for people with dementia and to fully involve patients and their carers. If you'd like to discuss this further, please contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service on 01472 875403. All staff who have direct contact with patients are receiving dementia awareness training and we have dementia champions in all areas. We are currently in the process of setting up a dignity room so staff can access nightwear for patients in hospital with no items of their own clothing or access to day clothes to be used on discharge so that patients are sent home in appropriate clothing. In conjunction with the local Dementia Forum (made up of representatives from the commissioners, carers, Alzheimers Society, care homes, hospitals trust, mental health, Admiral nurses) we have developed a planning tool called ‘My Life' for patients with dementia. Information about the individual’s life can help us to deliver care more effectively and in a respectful way, such as things that are important about their family or previous occupation and if they need assistance with eating and drinking. Kind regards, Sarah Mainprize
