"Knee Replacement: The time period meant I could have had a stroke!"

About: Tameside General Hospital

(as the patient),

Overall, I thought the nursing staff were very good, and worked very hard.

The 4 patients in our ward were, on the whole, pleased with the care we received, particularly by 1 nurse called Ellen, a Phillopino nurse who was really amazing and exceptional, nothing fazed her and nothing was too much trouble.

However, two things happened to me personally which were quite upsetting.

1) On the day I was admitted, I gave to a member of staff all my tablets, in boxes as requested, and they were duly locked in a drawer in my locker. This was on Thursday, and after my operation and the following days, I was daily given a number of tablets in pots to take, and quite honestly I did not know what the tablets were.

My blood pressure continued to increase and by the following Tuesday was at 188. When I questioned If I was taking my blood pressure tablets, the nurse looked in my locker drawer and to find all my tablets there - the time period meant I could have had a stroke!

2) On being shown how to walk just once up and down the ward on crutches, I was told to practice myself. When I next used them to go to the bathroom, I fell backwards onto my bottom as I opened the bathroom door.

The physio team apologised, saying they should have told me to go with a member of staff. I then went to the toilet, and when I was sat on it a male nurse burst in and shouted asking for help. He then went out and left the door open with me still on the toilet. I was really upset by this.
