"Stomach cancer: Staff were so kind and worked together as a team."

About: Rotherham Hospital

(as the patient),

I look upon my stay in the hospital with great respect and appreciation.

I was in a totally new environment, but good staff were so kind and worked together as a team.

I had complete confidence and I thought the hygiene presented by both nurses and doctors was very good.

I wondered why visitors are allowed to bring in food and drink to consume at the bedside and also to enter the hospital without having footwear cleaned.

Dear Imperial968, thank you for your posting on Patient Opinion we really appreciate patient feedback and it is good to hear that you had such a positive experience with our staff and your appreciation will be passed on to the staff concerned.

With regard to bringing in food and drink, at times when ill, people will fancy particular food items that family and friends may bring in, we do ask that this is stored in appropriate containers, named and dated if it should be placed in a fridge. We are however, unable to heat/reheat food that has been brought in. On occasions family members eating with the ill member of their family may encourage them to eat and drink. We would only ask that people bringing in their own food/beverages, to have at the bedside, to ensure that any waste is appropriately removed. The Assistant Director for Infection Prevention and Control has assured me that there is no risk of infection to patients by visitors not having their footwear cleaned, unless visitors were to put their dirty shoes on the patient’s bed. It is nice however that you have thought about the dirt that is walked through the hospital corridors, but at times this can’t be avoided, e.g. people arriving in an emergency and when we have inclement weather.

Thank you for your comments.

With kind regards

Kerry
