My wife is currently admitted to the Post Natal ward at the Burnley General Hospital following a caesarian operation yesterday. To start with, she has been put in a room with 3 x other patients who all had natural birth. I find that they are well understaffed and have failed to provide the care and attention that is needed by a patient who has had a major surgery. The response time for the Midwife help buzzer is anything from a minute to 3-4 mins and during this time a newly born baby can choke to death. They don't let anyone stay overnight with the patient - not even the partner. My wife is unable to move without someone's help i.e. changing posture, getting up, sorting her pillow, and getting out of the bed to go to the toilet - for which she needs help as well. I spend all day with her asking for as little help from staff as possible but tonight when I left my wife was told to stop using the buzzer as this is for emergencies only and start taking care of her baby herself as she should now be able to do all that. I don't understand what they are supposed to then? I'd like to know what their job role is and why they are called the Midwives. I find this ridiculous that they are asking a 36hrs old surgery patient to start moving about and taking care of herself and the 36hrs old baby. I'm disgusted by this treatment and am going to make an official complaint.
