For over a week I had been suffering from breathing difficulties and on the the 5th May I dialled 999 and asked for the Paramedics, who arrived immediately and took me to Royal Blackburn Hospital.

It is often very daunting for a sick person to be unexpectedly whisked away to an unfamiliar environment and left in the care of strangers, but this was not what I experienced. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming that I very soon felt to be a well-established member in a new community rather than a new arrival in a sick bed urgently needing care and attention.

The doctor's diagnosis of my condition and subsequent treatment administered by a very conscientious nursing staff quickly restored my health and five days later I left the hospital being very grateful to all those working on Ward D1
