About: Medway Maritime Hospital

Anything else?

Following a serious accident at home my husband was transferred by ambulance to A&E where he remained for approx. 14 hours. During that period he was shoved from pillar to post. At one stage as he was being moved by a porter to the corridor he let me know that he was going to be sick. As he was lying down because of a spinal injury where he could not move his head / body he was at risk of choking on his own vomit. I called to a group of nurses standing about 'chatting' for help. They all ignored me. A member of the public came to our assistance and helped me clean up.

My husband was left laying in vomit for the whole 14 hour period. I did my best to clean up around him. At no time did anyone offer him a blanket when he was recovering, despite a large number of staff present no one seemed to be doing any work. I sent a lot of time looking at people moving paper on desks in front of the cubicles but not getting any work done. I also noticed auxiliaries walking back and forth again without doing anything and as an ex auxiliary myself I do know what I am talking about. It takes very little effort to 'sweep' the ward at regular intervals to check whether people need a glass of water or blanket etc It was particularly depressing to watch old people on their own who could not answer for themselves not being cared for.

In the end after my husband was given morphine and his tests revealed no major damage to his spine despite my protestations that he was also suffering from concussion caused by the fall he was discharged before he was fit enough.

I am very sorry to hear about your experience of using the emergency department. This certainly is not the standard we wish to deliver and I would encourage you to get in touch so I can look into your concerns in more detail. Thank you for taking the time to provide this feedback - we need this to further improve the experience patients have when they visit the hospital.
