"Unprofessional and Rude Staff"

About: Hillingdon Hospital

Anything else?

13 weeks pregnant and woke at 1am Saturday morning to bleeding. Called 111 and they sent a ambulance to take me to A&E. 111 service and ambulance service were great and speedy. Arrived at A&E and was left in a bay for 6hours before anyone even spoke to me or communicated with me to advice what was going on. I was in a lot of pain and it was a very worrying time. No pain relief was offered nothing. I understand it was the weekend however A&E was not busy. The doctors and nurses were more interested in standing around having personal conversations then patient care. The amount of staff that just walked passed without even checking I was okay was ridiculous no one seemed to care.

When I was finally seen by a doctor I was told I was probably having a miscarriage there's nothing they could do and just to go home. This is without any examination just based on a one minute conversation. Obviously too busy to worry about patient care.

Myself and other half had to push for someone to actually come and examine me otherwise I would have just been sent home. The doctor was very rude laughed in our faces huffed ad puffed and walked off to phone his colleague. Extremely rude considering he has told me that I have miscarried and it is a very upsetting time for us.

Upon another doctor examining me it turns out my cervix were closed and if I was miscarrying they would be open. Because of the pain I was in and the bleeding I was transferred to a ward. On the ward I was not offered any pain relief what so ever and when I did ask it just got forgot about. I was not allowed to eat or drink and was put on a drip for fluids. Unfortunately my hand/vein started bleeding which transferred into the drip and clogged it up. The nurse tried flushing which was very painful she didn't seem to care I was screaming in agony and gave up and walked off. Another nurse told me I needed the drip. I agreed to try again but this was another thing that got forgotten about and the drip was just left at the side of the bed throughout the rest of my stay.

I was sent for a scan and baby is still alive with a strong heartbeat this was such a relief for myself and partner. They checked my womb and there was no sign of bleeding. Unfortunately they can't work out where the bleed has come from but I was told it defiantly wasn't a miscarriage.

I am very upset in the treatment from the staff at Hillingdon hospital and extremely upset from the doctor in A&E who caused unnecessary upset and stress I did not need at this very worrying time and the fact that his diagnosis without even examining me was completely wrong and when he was questioned he laughed in my face. There are a lot of questions that need answering here.

Maybe staff need extra training in patient care and how to deal with sensitive issues.

Thank you very much for taking the time to provide this feedback, we do take all comments seriously. We recognise that this must have been a very worrying time for you and would like to apologise if you felt that our staff appeared rude and uncaring. It is always our intention to provide excellent and responsive care to our patients, so we are disapointed to read that you felt that this was not the case. As a department we also work hard to see and treat every patient within 4 hours of arrival in A+E and patients are triaged to help with this process. The medical staff inform me that they had referred you to the appropriate speciality and as they were busy on the maternity ward there was a long wait for you to be seen. If this was not communicated effectively then I apologise for this. We can only apologise again for the distress this incident has caused you and we would be very happy to meet with you to discuss your concerns in more detail. Please contact Matron Wendy Stevens via 01895 238282 if you would like to arrange this.
