Having recently undergone rhyizolysis for chronic back pain I attended a follow up outpatients clinic. I was seen by a registrar rather than the consultant who clearly had not familiarised himself with my case. After a brief conversation when I explained that I was still in pain he left to obtain advice from the consultant and returned to say that nothing more could be done in my case other than pain management to be organised through my GP. A letter was written to my GP 4 weeks later with no copy to me. I was therefore left in limbo with no indication if other courses of treatment might be available. An explanation direct from the consultant would at least have been reassuring.

Thank you for your comment. It's not always possible for patients to be seen by a consultant during every follow up appointment they have and in some cases they will see a specialist registrar. We are sorry to hear that you felt that the registrar was not familiarised with your case and that they didn't provide you with the information you expected. You also mentioned that you didn't receive a copy of the letter to your GP. Patients are entitled to receive a copy of any letter that is written about them on request, so please contact your consultant's secretary who should be able to arrange this for you. We will pass on your comments to staff who are involved in your care, as we think it's important that they are aware of the issues you have raised here. In the meantime, we hope that your pain is settling down. However, if you need any further advice please don't hesitate to call our orthopaedic department or, if you prefer, your GP.
