"Bellhouse Drayson Ward - Paediatrics"

About: John Radcliffe Hospital

Anything else?

Last week my 19 month old son was admitted unexpectedly with a concern over a virus. It was tremendously worrying and made a little worse by the fact that we have a four week old baby meaning his mum couldnt stay over with him, which she would have preferred. I went with him and arrived at 9.30pm. The nurse who looked after us was immediately very caring, practical and reassuring. He put both my son and I at ease, and took great care to explain what would be happening that evening. The doctor that came to take bloods at 12midnight was also tremendously down to earth, caring, and practical. She shared her own experiences as a parent as well as a professional which I thought was a great touch.

Within minutes of arrival I had no doubts whatsoever about handing my son over to their care and I had a great sense that we were in the right place.

Throughout the night I heard other staff attending to children on our ward who didnt have parents with them and I found the love and attention they gave extremely touching.

All ended well and we were able to come home the following day again with a very clear explanation of what was happening, and the reassurance of being able to get back in touch with any concerns.

This is the third time we have used the JR. Two births and now this. Without exception we have been hugely impressed by the professionalism and sheer commitment of all of those we have come into contact with.

I've never lost faith in the NHS anyway, but I hope that all those who have cared for us are rightly proud of what they do, and are aware of just how grateful the vast majority of us are.

Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your experience in Bellhouse Drayson Ward at the Children’s hospital – we were pleased to learn that your son was well enough to be discharged the day after his admission and hope that he is now recovering well.

We are aware that visiting a hospital, particularly when a sick child is being treated, can be a very worrying and daunting experience, and it is always reassuring to know that staff are epitomising our values of ‘delivering compassionate excellence’ in such a strong and positive way.

You mention that on two previous visits you were also impressed by our staff’s professionalism and commitment – we will ensure that staff involved in all your visits are aware of your comments.

We wish you and your family well.
