"Visiting the continence advisory service"

About: Locala Community Partnerships CIC / Continence advisory service

(as the patient),

I was concerned that after having had two babies within the space of two years and returning to an exercise regime, I was experience mild urinal leakage. Although the leakage was minimal it was causing me some distress and lack of self confidence and apart from anything else making me feel old!

I was referred to the continence advisory service although the idea of attending a continence centre filled me with horror (the idea of being categorised with people who were much older than me and experiencing severe incontinence). There is such a stigma and lack of understanding about the causes of and variation in incontinence.

During my first visit I was assessed and given a programme of exercises by an extremely supportive practitioner and physiotherapist who took into account all my feelings.

I have since been to the centre twice and been reassessed and given progressive exercises to practice. Since then I have been practising the pelvic floor exercises religiously and have seen a massive improvement in things.

I can't recommend the service enough to anyone especially those younger women who feel that the service isn't relevant to them.

Thank you so much for your positive comments.

You've very clearly covered all the messages our service tries to send out to the public. Namely many younger women experience urine leaks, these leaks although small have a significant effect on quality of life and no-one wants to talk about it!

It's great to hear that you've managed to take on board the advice you were given and that you're doing your pelvic floor exercises regularly. That really is the key to success! I'm sure you will continue to improve.

Thanks again for your recommendation.
