"My father's admission to cardiothoracic ITU"

About: University Hospital (Coventry)

Anything else?

My father was transferred to the cardiothoracic unit on 30.3.13 for consideration of surgery after a major heart attack. Sadly he was unfit for surgery and deteriorated and subsequently died.

Dad was cared for magnificently during his admission. The nursing staff were incredibly kind and thoughtful, attending not only to Dad's medical and nursing care needs but also supporting our large family at a difficult time for all of us. The doctor was in frequent attendance and provided us with all the information we needed in a clear and balanced way, and with great sensitivity. We felt well-supported in making the difficult decision not to attempt surgery and to turn off machines, and the sensitive discussions were handled extremely well.

The palliative care provided in Dad's final hours was wonderful, and we were deeply touched by the care and humanity of all the staff, particularly in a unit which is focused on providing hi-tech medical care.

This was the NHS at its best, and we are most grateful.
