"Appalling Care of the Elderly"
About: Queen Elizabeth Hospital (Birmingham) Queen Elizabeth Hospital (Birmingham) Birmingham B15 2TH
My 88 year old grandmother is currently on ward 518 and I was shocked to hear how she had been treated yesterday, which was witnessed by another family member. They needed to move her from a room into a bay as they needed that room for another patient, which is fair enough but the way they handled her was disgusting. She is a frightened woman who has hardly ever been in hospital her whole life. After being shoved from pillar to post yesterday she was then put on the floor, much to the upset of my aunt who was with her at the time, whilst they prepared a bed for her. My grandmother has had several falls recently and the floor is the last place she needed to be, they didn't even make her comfortable! Since when did it become acceptable for anyone, let alone an 88 year old woman, to be made to wait on the floor? She is also losing weight rapidly due to being unable to swallow solid food correctly, which they seem to have mistaken for her being awkward and just not eating, finally someone came yesterday to get her swallowing looked at.
When she first came to the hospital she said how lovely all the nurses were and that they made her comfortable and feel at ease and she wasn't frightened any more. Now she has been there a week it's almost as if she is just a nuisance to them and she has gone back to being a frightened old lady again. I knew instantly by the look on her face yesterday that she was very unhappy and scared, I was completely shocked and disgusted when I found out why. The care of elderly patients at this hospital seriously needs looking at!
