"My daughter was admitted for appendicitis ..."

About: Southampton General Hospital

(as a relative),

What I liked

My daughter was admitted for appendicitis on 14-12-2007, the staff in the assessment clinic were very good and helpful, the surgeon was very professional and considerate he explained the whole proceedure to me in full and came back up to see me after the surgery to assure me everything went well. But unfortunately I did not rate the hospital its self at all. It was unclean and dirty, the toilets and showers were not cleaned at all over the weekend, this was not done until Monday morning, they were filthy, I was worried at my daughter using the facilities after having open surgery, and after advertising about using the hand gel before touching patients witnessed doctors going from one patient to another without using it.

What could be improved

The hospital needs some decent cleaning staff, not just employing cheap labour! It is appauling and I am not suprised people pick up so many infections from this hospital. Bring back matrons to supervise these wards keeping on top of cleaning staff and the cleanliness of the hosptial.
