"A & E Excellent Care - Kingfisher Ward Not Much..."

About: The Great Western Hospital

Anything else?

I was referred to A & E by my doctor with a suspected blood clot in my leg. Waited for about an hour in A & E before being seen. Had a thorough check over as blood pressure/heart rate was sky high. Whilst being treated in A & E I was treated with respect and dignity and can't praise them enough for the work they do. After staying in hospital for a couple of days (after having scans done and blood pressure coming down) I was discharged with a prescription for anti coagulant drugs to be administered by myself at home through a needle (was told this could be changed at any pharmacy but found out that the doseage I needed couldn't be found in any pharmacy in Swindon. The drugs had to be couriered to me in the end as I was due to have the drugs injected. I was asked to go to Kingfisher Ward 24 hours later for a scan. Arrived at Kingfisher Ward - they didn't even know I was coming in. I was told to go to the Scanning Dept to have a scan on my leg, so hobbled all the way to the ground floor. When I came back I was told to wait in a room full of people. Was seen and told there was no clot in my leg and to take paracetamol (they gave me paracetamol before this and it had no effect on the pain). I was told that I could have a second opinion which I did and was told it was a muscular problem and to take ibroprufen, but having Barretts Oesophagus I am not allowed to have this and if they had read my notes then they should have known this. They said to wear a compression stocking (was not measured for these and not given any so rang my doctors who prescribed pain relief and compression socks. I spoke to the pharmacist who needed the measurements for the correct size). I feel like I wasn't treated very well in Kingfisher Ward and it felt like that they were not patient freindly - I hope I never have to go into this Ward ever again in my life. After having such good care in A & E this Ward has let the hospital down and my faith in the hospital in doubt.
