I visited my GP suffering from peri menopausal symptoms. I don't think he is clued up on hormones and so he referred me to the practice gynaecologist. Although I expressed interest in using systemic HRT, she told me it was unnecessary, caused cancer and told me to take Menopace. I complained of urinary incontinence and told her I thought I had a prolapse. I was not examined at any point.
I went away and researched my options. My husband grew concerned with my depression and I visited a private specialist who recommended estradiol, progesterone and testosterone. I started using these with cessation of symptoms.
Subsequently I was referred back to the gynaecologist because I believed I had a cystocele. Examination revealed a cystocele and I was advised to use estriol cream for three months. I asked if the vagina magically rejuvenated itself after this period and she reluctantly gave repeat prescriptions. My GP sought a second opinion and a rectocele was also discovered.
The hospital gynaecologist was prepared to write to my GP stating that I should use my hormones and they are now prescribed for me - although I expect another fight when I run out of testosterone.
Most of the treatment has been shambolic and compromised my pelvic health. I had physiotherapy but this will not cure the retocele and cystocele. My GP is excellent in many aspects but I suspect the PCTs and NICE don't care about treating menopause.
