"being referred to as a baby!!!"

About: Wansbeck Hospital

Anything else?

I have been having heavy bleeding and periods of up to a month, so was referred to a gynaecologist. My appointment at 4 o'clock, was for a transvaginal scan. I was so worried about this procedure but the lady doing it made me feel really at ease and it was a piece of cake but then I saw my gynaecologist. She informed me that I had 2 cysts and needed a biopsy, alarm bells should have rang when I saw the poor lady who was in before me!!!!. It was late in the day and I had been waiting some time, the nurse informed me that I had not been forgotten but they had had a difficult case that had lasted an hour, (poor woman) I think by now the gynaecologist was tired and wanted to go home and I was the last one to be seen. I was not told what to expect or what was going to happen, before I knew it I was in the stirrups and she was ready to go.(home in her case) In went the spectrum (had that loads of times) but this hurt.. ok then not a word from her and a very sharp pain making me cry out!! what the hell.. all I got was cough!! every time I cough I could feel all the equipment coming out and she just shoved it back in ..not a word, .the nurses in the room were lovely but not her!!! She then took it all back out and said what do you want??? I want it over just do it, she got a smaller spectrum and started again..... no>>>no. She then stopped again and basically told me I was a baby!!!!!! So upset... I'm not a baby. left in pain , in tears, bleeding and had nothing done. never going back.

Dear Maria

Can I begin with letting you know how truly sorry I am that you have had such an upsetting experience during a procedure which given its intimate nature can be uncomfortable at the best of times.

I understand the importance of being talked through a procedure so you know what to expect –I’m sorry this was not communicated to you, to enable you to feel more comfortable.

I am also sorry that you were kept waiting, however as every woman is different it is sometimes necessary to take a little longer with some patients to complete a procedure. This may mean a clinic runs later than expected and whilst I appreciate this wasn’t ideal for you, I hope you understand it is not appropriate to rush investigations.

I would be very grateful if you could contact me to discuss the events around your appointment in more detail and also to let you know about alternative options to receiving the investigations and treatments which you may find more suitable.

I hope that by talking to you in person I can go some way to reassure you that the treatment you describe falls well below the levels of care I would expect. Please be reassured that your comments will be fed back to the department and practitioner concerned so that this lack of communication and compassion doesn’t happen again.

You can contact me on my mobile which is 07876 502899 or if you’d rather contact me by email you can find me at annie.laverty@nhct.nhs.uk.

With best wishes

Annie
