"Excellent support from all labour & maternity ward..."

About: Royal Derby Hospital

Anything else?

My wife was having our 1st child but he was found to be breech just after a sweep had been done and so she had to have a c-section.

The labour ward team were very reassuring and calm, which was exactly what we needed in that situation. They listened to worries that we had and answered our questions clearly.

After transfer to the maternity ward it was found before discharge that our son had lost quite a bit of weight and had urates in his nappies. It seemed he wasn't breast feeding properly and so wasn't getting bigger. In order to get his weight back up he needed to be bottle fed, which came at great distress to my wife who had always thought she would be able to breast feed. She was very upset, crying and despondent but its thanks to the nurses, midwives and also a specialist who took 2hrs of her time to talk through the situation and why we have to do what we're going to do that got my wife to understand, calm down and accept what was on the face a perfectly reasonable decision but actually quite a shock for my wife at the time.

The c-section wasn't planned and neither were the feeding problems, on top of this my wife's mother tongue isn't English (although she speaks plenty enough to understand what's going on). I thought that all of the people involved in their care were considerate when communicating with her, they took time and effort to help both of us understand the situation so we could make well informed decisions, and they didn't complain when we were overly emotional or unreasonable.

A massive thank you to all those who helped us. We are now a very happy family. Both mother and baby doing well!
