"Care of the elderly"
About: Royal Surrey County Hospital Royal Surrey County Hospital Guildford GU2 7XX
My aunt was admitted following a fall at her nursing home. She is unable to walk unaided and has Alzheimer's. when we visited her we found her lying on her bed dressed only in a theatre gown. The theatre gown was twisted up by her neck and she was exposed for all to see when they walked past. Her husband was with me and he was very distressed. I asked a nurse why she wasn't dressed and was told she had no clothes with her. On looking she had a full set of clothes in her locker. No one had bothered to look and no one had taken the time to find out.
Two days later she had a serious fall in the hospital as she tried to get out of bed to go to the toilet. Again no one had taken the time to assess her Alzheimer's which means she wanders. Cot bars would have solved this from the start.
I only wish this was an isolated experience but on all our visits to the hospital the care given to the elderly and confused has fallen well short of good. We have discussed this with PALS and just got fobbed off with promises of improvement. Still waiting to see it and dread the times she has to come in for care.
