"Following a fracture and surgery ..."

About: Torbay Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

Following a fracture and surgery for same, my time on Warrington Ward (Ainslie was closed) was excellent. The care, attention and patience of the Staff was wonderful. I REALLY enjoyed the meals, especially having a menu!

I felt that the Nurses listened to our needs, (with one exception in the night when a patient's particular need wasn't taken on board.)

I would like the then Warrington Ward Staff to know of my appreciation (Sept 14 + 2007)

I was in E-Bay (but not sold!!!)

In addition I would like to say that the Nursing Staff on A&E were so caring.

What could be improved

The Staff should be firmer with visitors. I observed a child being allowed by parents and patient (the Gran) to lie on the bed, fully clothed and with outdoor shoes. She ran her hands over the bed rails, and an older member of the family leant over and put her hands on the wall. I felt this should have been dealt with.

The drip stands and the blood pressure monitor stand, when seen in the sunlight, showed numerous fingerprints, and in the ten days I was there were never cleaned. Also the base of the monitor stand was very dusty.

The tea ladies are so kind, but they push the trollies, open doors, pour out the tea, then handle the cups, and pass biscuits with bare unwashed hands - likewise with the toast in the mornings. Apart from the necessity of the latter I never accepted anything from the tea trolleys.

One other point. In A&E a Doctor came into my room two or three times, then collected the necessary items from a drawer, pushed open the door yet again and started to prepare my arm for a canula (no apparent hand-wash). Then some of the contents of the sterile pack fell on to the table and were subsequently used. I commented about it, but it was ignored. I told two other staff (not A&E) but it was also ignored.

Sorry about the negatives - but they have been on my mind.

We are very glad that your stay on Warrington Ward last year was excellent. We have passed on your kind comments to staff on the ward, in our catering department and also in A&E. We have also copied them in on your comments about what you felt could be improved. You might be interested to know that over the past year we have been one of just 20 hospitals nationwide selected to be a flagship for better patient safety and infection control. We are seeing improvements in how well patients are recovering and significant reductions in infections, and hope this will pave the way for the rest of the NHS. Nursing staff are encouraged to challenge any colleagues - including doctors - not complying with hygiene and infection control. We have brought in visiting restrictions - including for children - and appreciate being given views on whether we should tighten up on visiting hours and numbers further.
