"The care of my elderly Mum in Brockham Ward East Surrey Hospital Redhill "

About: East Surrey Hospital / General surgery

(as a relative),

Myself and 3 siblings were devoted to our mother, the love, care, dedication and consideration we all gave to her and the time we loved spending with her was a result of the beautiful person she was; she was an exceptional mother and person.

She was admitted to Brockham Ward at East Surrey Hospital at the end of January 2013 with abdominal pain. We were there during and between visiting hours every day, as we didn't want her to be on her own.

Anytime we called a staff member, or went to the desk for advice, or asked any one of numerous questions, we were treated with respect and concern and the member of staff came to talk to us immediately.

The sisters, nurses, domicilliary staff, the doctors, consultants gave us so much time and in depth answers to our questions.

They were extremely kind and gentle with mum, going over and above in the loving way they cared for her.

All this was before the test results showed she was in the late stages of cancer; up until then we didn't know for sure what was wrong, although the doctors had suggested it might be cancer.

The dedication and care of the staff continued to be exceptional. We were with mum when she died, and were devastated. The night staff later came in with tea and biscuits, and one nurse, who had on many evenings rubbed cream in mums arms as she was scratching them, asked if she could give mum a kiss.

As we finally left the hospital, the staff on duty hugged each one of us, as we cried into their arms.

We are lost without mum, but we all agree that if mum had to go into hospital, thank goodness she went to the best. East Surrey Hospital in our opinion is exceptional. Thank you all so much

Dear 'Victory'

Thank so much for sharing your story with us. It was a lovely message to read and I'm pleased we were able to offer you and your siblings some comfort throughout what must have been a very upsetting time. We shared your comment with staff at a recent staff meeting as an example of how care and compassion and small gestures can really make a difference to patient's - and their family's - experience of the hospital and our services.

Take care and thank you.
