Anything else?
I attended GWH with a service user with profound learning difficulties who had an injured finger, this was 21:30 hours or thereabouts on a Saturday night (07:04:13), the service user was supported by a senior member of the care home and the home manager called in to assist. initially the service user was calm and interested in the surroundings. staff on reception were unable to allocate a separate room to allow space on admission to a&e but we sat in the childrens space around the corner, we did not wait too long and were assessed by a nurse and then a doctor, after an x-ray and re-assessment the s/user became distressed due to change in routine and change in environment, the medical staff were excellent, compassionate, despite not knowing how to communicate with the service user, her needs; were taken into consideration at all times, the staff from the home who knew her well were consulted at all stages and best interests considered at all times. medical staff found a quiet room for us to sit and await results, allowing staff to soothe and manage the service user who's behaviour was escalating due to the different and busy environment. Eventually the service user was assessed by a senior doctor in the ed dept and her issue resolved immediately, quickly, with no pain or discomfort, the doctor explained what he was doing and why at all stages, we were then discharged home, where the service user settled and slept well.
I would like to thank the doctors attending the service user, who obviously unused to dealing with an individual with profound learning difficulties listened to and responded to the staff attending from the home who knew the individual well., the doctors listened, responded as advised by the staff with the service user, were kind, empathetic, honest and acted naturally, speaking to the individual as they would talk to anyone else, which was so appreciated. the time given to the service user and the recognition that her needs were to be met urgently to allow her to go home asap to feel secure and comfortable were also appreciated.
the doctor who relocated the dislocation was kind, explained to the staff and service user what would happen, and was so skilled no-one realised the re-location had been done until he said, his kindness and skill was amazing. the doctors supporting were also very kind and concerned, the nurses were so very busy we did not have a lot of contact with but they were polite and caring, explaining all issues well.. Many thanks
